Ginger’s Pride

Heritage: Kentucky, USA

Farmed for many years in the country gardens of Kentucky, this variety has a long history in the Midwestern USA dating as far back as the early 1800’s.

Sprawling vines produce beautiful heavy-ribbed oblong fruit up to 12” (30cm) long and 8.5” (20cm) in diameter, weighing as much as 15 lbs (6.7kg). This melon is BIG! Skin is dark green, with netting developing a yellowish tinge when mature. The light salmon coloured flesh is mild, extremely juicy with just the right sweetness. Melt in your mouth quality for sure! Easy to grow, even competing well with weeds. This melon has done really well in our Ontario climate. One of our favourites! Matures in 80-90 days. (27 seeds/g)

*Taste Quality* For most Melons, once picked they should be left to rest on your kitchen counter for a week before cutting. The absence from the vine signals the fruit to finish turning its carbohydrates into sugar!

Tips for Growing Marvelous Melons! Melons love heat and full sun. It is best to start indoors at least 4 weeks prior to plant date. Alternatively, melons can also be direct seeded if the season is long enough. Sow seed 1/2” (1cm) deep in warm, well fertilized soil. Plant 2-3 seedlings in mounds 24” (60cm) apart. Mulch heavily with straw so that the fruit will be cushioned against the soil. The most suitable companion plants for Melons are; corn, sunflowers, and morning glory. Do not plant near potatoes. Melons usually germinate within 5-7 days (80-90ºF/27-32ºC).
