Laxton’s Progress No.9 (Shelling = edible Pea)
Heritage: England
Developed by English plant breeder Thomas Laxton in the early 1880’s, and introduced to North American seed catalogues in the early 1900’s. This variety is still considered to be one of the earliest maturing compact-type peas. Due to its dependability and nutrient content, it is also one of the most commonly grown peas used to make baby food.
Vigorous plants are of smaller than average height growing to 16” (40cm) tall and producing large dark green pointed pods 4” (10cm) long. Plump pods are tightly packed with 6-8 tender round peas. Flavour is very sweet and delicate. Excellent fresh, canned, and frozen. Quick to mature and dependable, even in challenging weather conditions. Shows disease resistance. Matures in 60-70 days. (3 seeds/g)
Tips for Growing Precious Peas! Peas are quite versatile tolerating a wide range of temperatures including light frosts. They are best suited to top production in the cooler weather of early Spring, or Autumn. Peas can be planted in both seasons to get a double crop in one season. As soon as the ground can be worked, plant seed 1” (2.5cm) deep and 2” (5cm) apart. Peas have no problem with crowding, but must have trellis or fence support. Full sun and moisture are essential. The most suitable companion plants for Peas are; corn, carrots, radishes, mustard and cucumbers. Do not plant near onions or garlic. Peas usually germinate within 5-7 days (50-75ºF/10-24ºC)
